Load handling configuration, safety interlocks, commissioning checks, and maintenance handover

CHALLENGE

The Problem

The steel plant required a heavy-duty gantry crane for frequent scrap handling in a hot, dusty production area. The design review had to account for radiant heat, conductive contamination, repeated load cycles, electromagnetic attachment control, and maintainable access around the lifting mechanism.

SOLUTION

Our Approach

The proposed configuration used a reinforced double girder gantry structure, heat-resistant electrical components, H-class motor insulation, forced cooling, protected control equipment, and interlocks for the electromagnetic attachment. Inspection platforms and service clearances were included in the equipment layout.

ENGINEERING DECISIONS

From Selection To Handover

SELECTION BASIS
  • Thermal margin for motors, brakes, cables, and control panels
  • Structural fatigue performance under frequent load cycles
  • Protection against conductive dust and radiant heat
  • Maintainable access to brakes, drums, wheels, and electrical panels
DELIVERY SCOPE
  • Double girder gantry structure and metallurgy-duty lifting mechanism
  • Heat-resistant motors, braking system, control panels, and cabling
  • Electromagnetic attachment interface and safety interlocks
  • Operator cabin, documentation, spare parts list, and training materials
COMMISSIONING

Commissioning focused on unloaded and rated-load functional tests, brake response, limit devices, attachment interlocks, travel alignment, thermal behavior, and operator emergency procedures before production handover.

MAINTENANCE HANDOVER
  • Short inspection intervals for brakes, wire rope, drum, hook block, and wheels
  • Frequent cleaning of cooling paths and sealed electrical enclosures
  • Temperature trending for motors, bearings, gearboxes, and control cabinets
  • Documented replacement criteria for heat-affected cables and friction parts
